Summary: Yomi won and completed his mission...
Except for one unforeseen issue.

What had once been the Orange base stood empty. Everyone was gone, even the robot. All that was left of the kaiju that had been walking the halls, that had stood up for their right to exist, was the familiar smears of red. Their bodies gone or unrecognisable, whether they be as humans or kaiju.

They’d put their faith in something. They hadn’t known what was lurking among them.

Some of them had even become that thing they’d called “Icarus” in their final moments. A desperate attempt to defend their loved ones against the oncoming terror.

They ended up lying side-by-side with the Icarus that had once threatened them.

Yomi had thought he’d had a handle on this. After all his planning, it shouldn’t have gone this poorly. “Poorly”. Well, his bosses would have called it a resounding success. All he had to do was take care of the final survivor, and it would all be over.

Yet Yomi had tucked himself away in a corner of the base, watching the clear blue sky through a mirror pointed at the torn apart wall. Out of sight.

Was it too late to not want this?

“Yomi,” Icarus called again, the sound echoing through the room. Yomi morphed, forcing himself into a smaller form, as the final Icarus’s heels clicked on the metal floors. He didn’t need to breathe. As long as Icarus didn’t-

Before he could even think it, Icarus’s fingers wrapped around the sheet of metal that had hidden him. He threw it aside with ease, exposing Yomi to the dull light of the room.

Icarus knelt before him. He didn’t speak. They only stared at each other. Yomi’s single eye into the lenses of Icarus.

Juurou bundled him in his arms, bloody hands staining Yomi’s clothes, holding him tight against his chest as the mask turned to ribbons and disappeared.

He looked just like he did in all his shoots. Face unchanged by everything.

“It’s just us now.”

How had he lived?

“We’ll be okay.”
