UuultraC is a BL visual novel released in Japan in October 2020, and had it’s English release in March 2022, provided by MangaGamer. The story is set in Tokyo in 1970, and inspired by the tokusatsu genre that was gaining popularity in the 70s.

Kaiju have appeared throughout Japan, spreading as an infection that turns ordinary people into kaiju. The first generation Sun Mask Icarus used to fight the kaiju, but the title has passed to a new generation; a generation of multiple Icarus and local heroes who want to protect Japan.

But kaiju were people. The infected are shunned and have had enough, starting their battle for acceptance as still being human.

The novel includes references to classic series like Devilman, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Super Sentai and other Kaiju media.

Anyway, this is an 18+ BL visual novel so that’s the real reason-

There are three chapters to this story, each with a different protagonist.

Content Warnings

Essential! There’s a lot of content in this visual novel that’s not suitable for everyone. As I was reading, I did my best to update the Does the Dog Die? page for it. If you’re at all squeamish, please check that out before buying this visual novel.

However, I’ve created this table, which will tell you the content warning, particular chapter it pertains to, and context. Spoilers will be blocked out like this so that if you want to read them you just highlight the black box.

Who are my cast?

Protagonists

Shoutarou Kagome Shoutarou is the protagonist of chapter 1. He lives with his boyfriend, Akira Kozuka, and is an ordinary citizen. He does a newspaper round in the morning and works at a switchboard in the evenings. He recently auditioned for a part as the new character on the kids' show version of Sun Mask Icarus but doesn't have any actual acting experience.

He then ends up soaked in kaiju blood and blacklisted as an infected person despite his infection results coming back negative. He ends up meeting an old friend that’s heavily involved in the kaiju rights movement, and face the true complexities of justice in a world of kaiju and heroes.

Shirou Choutsugai Shirou is the protagonist of chapter 2. Paparazzo, magazine photographer, studio photographer, former child actor, law school graduate and unwilling amateur private investigator. Unfortunately, he's also a queerphobe and only gets worse with a drink in him.

When he was a child actor, he fell for his co-star, Belle, and gave them his mother’s wedding ring. However, they lost contact after his family were killed in a kaiju attack. Shirou never forgave Icarus for failing to save his family and wants to expose him as a sham that only gets involved in fixed fights.

By chance, he’s reunited with his Belle in a bar, and now can’t be rid of him.

Juurou Sayashi Icarus himself, both in real life and on the screen. Juurou is a famous actor and a national treasure after taking over the TV role of Icarus from his father. Juurou is the protagonist of chapter 3 and the fearless leader of the newly formed Icarus Rangers (Icarangers?). However, he's a cold guy, seeming to take most lines from old scripts and shutting himself away to watch movies to process his feelings.
Love Interests

Akira Kozuka Shoutarou's boyfriend and a budding manga artist. While he has many secrets and a tendency to disappear in the middle of the night, he loves Shoutarou with all his heart. He even got Shoutarou's pyjamas tattood on his arm. But he's got a scary face, so people tend to assume he's up to no good, or that he's a bad match for Shoutarou.

And he has a habit of speaking in mahjong terms.

Suzu "Belle" Isshiki Shirou's beloved Belle. Isshiki is a non-binary man and a kaiju, formerly working as a drag queen and now working for Orange as an executive. He still has the ring Shirou gave him as a child and, though he hasn't been has prudishly faithful, still holds feelings for Shirou after all these years.

He’s also 6’6” in heels, his base height being 6’2”. Shirou’s only 5’10”.

Yomi Hibarino Juurou's childhood friend that grew up with him and only recently moved out (though not far). Despite Juurou's busy acting career, superhero career, and girlfriend, Yomi sticks close by. He cooks his meals, runs the Icarus headquarters by Juurou's side, works on the sets of Icarus, takes care of the dog, and works endless part-time jobs. Everyone who knows him finds him a polite and dependable young man, even if he's easy-going and tends to fry technology.

But he’s trying to make distance from Juurou for some reason…

What’s it about?

Chapter 1 One day, on his newspaper round, Shoutarou runs into the corpse of a kaiju, and a mysterious white version of Icarus. The Sun Mask Icarus everyone knows are red or black, and the suit is unfamiliar. But he’s gone before Shoutarou can even try to speak to him.

And then his boyfriend gets accused of kidnapping a child and he has to go clear things up, only for them both to be attacked by a kaiju. Shoutarou ends up coated in the sweet orange blood of the kaiju and is fired from his jobs the second his bosses find out.

In desperate need of a new job, he gets recruited by a photographer called Choutsugai and is reunited with an old friend. And then they’re once again attacked by a kaiju, this time to be saved by the beloved red Icarus. But Shoutarou spots that white Icarus again, standing just out of everyone’s view.

The world is filled with mysteries, and Shoutarou can’t help asking questions.

Chapter 2 Despite being a photo studio, Shirou’s never quite gotten the word “detective” properly off the window, and so keeps getting asked to investigate cases for people. Not one to say no to an envelope of cash, he’s happy to take a case and not really do anything about it.

The thing about that is sometimes you have to pay someone off to stop them from reporting you for it; leading to him taking a reporter to a bar, getting drunk, and running his bigoted mouth at the bartender. Only to realise, he knows that bartender as his childhood sweetheart.

Trying to move on from the one he spent his life waiting on, Shirou goes to a matchmaking event. Things go sour, however, when the event leads to him being attacked by a kaiju.

At the time of Shoutarou’s story, Shirou is a paparazzo trying to denounce Icarus as a hack partaking in rigged fights. His life is constantly tangled up in those of kaiju and his office is now filled with trans people that he can’t win against.

Chapter 3 The world is changing and it needs more heroes. Juurou has started to build up the Icarus Rangers so that they can cover more of Tokyo easier, protecting more people from kaiju attacks. While he puts everything into his work as Icarus, both in real life and on the screen, his heart is elsewhere. He’s spent his life pining for his childhood friend, Yomi, but Yomi’s started to make the distance between them. Juurou has a girlfriend, left to him by a previous Icarus and more a thing of convenience. He’s a national treasure. But all he wants is to keep Yomi with him forever.

Please contact me if you have any questions! I have brain worms and I did my best to keep this mostly spoiler-free so I’ll probably be writing more manifestos about the individual ships as those wriggle.
