Kamen Rider Den-O

Publication Date: 12/01/2019

Den-O is a mostly plotless show, and it’s really cute. The characters are dynamic, everyone bounces off each other so well and Takeru Satoh is a talented actor. It’s clear why his career springboarded how it did and why the imagin remain such staples of the kamen rider series.

While I don’t think Den-O goes to the levels of depth other Kobayashi series are known for, I can’t say it’s completely devoid of it either. It is a show about family, and loving your family even when you don’t know what you can do to help them. It’s supporting your sister through an extremely upsetting time in her life, when her mental health is in a terrible state and she’s not able to get help. Wanting to do something when you have no control over the situation. It’s helping others face the traumas of their past and move on instead of wishing to change it. Maybe it is that deep.

Den-O is always a show about love.

So, maybe, it’s Kobayashi’s best version of hiding that in a cute show with fun characters.

Ryoutarou is extremely cute and soft. He is seconds from being blown away in the wind for comedic effect.

And he’s always doing his best. He’s trying to help how he can, even knowing he’s just some guy who has the worst luck. Who can’t walk down the street without tripping.

He is the peak of doing what you can because there is only what you can. He never fully has the power to over-extend himself in the way of like Eiji, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to. He loves his family. He loves the imagin. He wants to do what he can.

Momotaros is our perfect counterpart to Ryoutarou and you just need to see them together to see how they complete each other. It’s so typical of Kobayashi’s dynamics but you do see the difference because… Momo is soft with Ryou. He cares. Ryou is his best friend and they’re not at odds with each other. Ryou is his family. When we need to see him have someone to butt heads with, it’s light-hearted fighting with Ura or getting annoyed at Ryuuta. Despite everything, Momo isn’t arrogant. He’s not selfish.

I have often described Momo and Ryou as the introvert-extrovert meme;

Ryoutarou loves to cuddle up with a cup of warm milk and a book in silence and Momo loves to scream and eat a mug.

Anyway Kobayashi needed to make a guy who is so scared of dogs-

I think we should ban Urataros from flirting with people while in Ryoutarou’s body.

He is not okay with this.

There is a Bear loose on the Train. The bear is Sleeping. Please be nice to him. If awoken, he might rip the train apart with his bear hands.

I love him.

I think that there was nothing more necessary in this show than giving this fucked up little guy mind control powers.

His entire thought process is a single fork to “Gun” or “Dance” and quite often he will do both. He has no ability to analyse which is appropriate for the situation, he’s doing purely whichever he feels in the moment. He has no reason to shoot but someone gave him a gun so he’s going to use it. Your best option is to give him some crayons and a colouring in book and hope it keeps him distracted. That, or offer him animals to play with and he’ll love that.

I, also, just wanna say I really read his relationship with Airi as him seeing her as his big sister.

Sieg.

Yuuto gave me a disease that makes me care about his heterosexual subplot. It turns out this happens if you just recycle the plot of Tsubasa. My brain adores it so much that it accepts it and it will care about them so much that it’s unfair.

This is Yuuto’s grandpa and he loves Yuuto very much. He’s here to look after him because it’s not like Yuuto’s gonna do it. He knows Yuuto needs support and that he is a good guy despite how abrasive he is. Yuuto’s his special grandson that needs friends and love and to not be alone. He can’t be lonely.

He’ll give you sweets to be friends with him.

Den-O is just chill to enjoy, it’s good if you like stuff without a real plot.
