This was my toku of 2019. For me, this was the best thing tokusatsu was offering in 2019 and I was living for every second of it. Get licencing rights for the UK and I will buy this bluray. I’d gift this bluray to everyone I know. I love this show so much. I’m not a big ultra fan so I didn’t get a lot of the references to old Ultra but I appreciate them and how they made them their own so you didn’t have to know the old episodes to enjoy call backs.
I really liked Taiga struggling in Taro’s shadow and how Fuma and Titas were also shaped by the legacy of their parents. But most of all I adored E.G.I.S. and watching them interact with things.
One important thing of Taiga is that the voice dramas are pretty essential for getting the backstories to the Ultras just because so much time in the actual show surrounded building the characters of E.G.I.S.
Hiroyuki is a precious little boy who I love and it’s so good to see him go through the absolute heartache of this show and to be so full of little aliens. He just loves aliens and people so much, he’s such a good soul and wants to help everyone. He has the pure ultra spirit.
Also it’s very cute how he thinks people can’t tell he has an ultraman infestation.
Gay icon for the start of the Reiwa era, Homare. God his backstory is so good. Seeing him grow comfortable with E.G.I.S. and be able to tell them he’s an alien and have them accept him. Also getting to see him interact with other aliens on casual terms but have to face how jaded they are about Earth was just great.
Really I just want more content with Homare, I love him.
Pirika is so good and seeing how much she loves her E.G.I.S. family. And they love her. God revisiting the idea of not having to follow the predetermined path just causes so much heartache. She wants to be with this family and do her job where she can help people. Also she just has great taste.
Kana is a legend, I love her. Kana is here for my many needs. I love how money focused she is but does have strong morals under it and how she isn’t interested in just hunting aliens but she wants to be able to protect them because she understands they’re just as vulnerable as anyone else. She cares for everyone so much, she’s great.
The show does a really good job of bringing across Taiga’s complex about living in his father’s shadow and how that can effect his actions. Him wanting to prove himself and also how Tregear finds it so easy to manipulate him because of it. It’s very believable that under different circumstances, Tregear could betray the Land of the Light and I think that’s an important element.
I love having an Ultra that is simultaneously a great sage, the Ultra equivelant of like 18, and also just Completely Ripped. So extremely ripped. Just flexing constantly.
Having him be a kind of mini version of Geed’s story was good and a nice balance to have in the trisquad. Just born in darkness but lives to protect and to make his idiot friends stop fighting. Just a sweet boy, he’s so good.
Fuma is a ninja loving brat. A complete weeb of an ultraman. But we were given so much heart in why he is the way that he is. I liked how he did struggle with being a good person when he grew up with so much adversity and how the help of a good person helped him improve himself. I also do like that he’s just extremely loud and ready to fight.
Tregear (Kirisaki as they’re just the same) is a horribly gremlin that I couldn’t resist falling in love with. He just has a very charismatic personality.
I really want more of the backstory and to see how he’s going to develop across the new era but I feel we’re going to get the best stuff for him by his interactions with Taro and Taiga since they appear to be his main bonds.
