Power Rangers Turbo

I try my best to say this isn’t that bad but boy Turbo was a slog to get through. This was the season where it really did hit me as just God I wish this one was over. Obviously, there’s the stand out episodes humour wise but the popular opinion seems to be just carranger did it better. Turbo was trying too hard to be serious and couldn’t lean into the humour. It’s still fine but I definitely see why people dislike it so much.

The show seemed to drop off a lot of the ends from Zeo, the entire Bulk and Skull plot from there has changed, Zedd and Rita are gone to be replaced by the new villains. It’s a weird amount of consistency errors and the movie didn’t really clear much up. In fact, it doesn’t even clear up why they’re getting new suits, despite how much power rangers loves to blow up the command centre to quickly make an excuse for needing new thing. There’s no basic explanations to anything going into Turbo.

I do like the concept of a movie for the season though, it’s very true to Japanese Tokusatsu.

Now I understand the choice of having Justin and he’s really the stronger part of the show, but you can definitely tell why people dislike him given everyone else is suddenly dumber than a 10 year old. I did like our second team of rangers more however and felt they did help kick the show into turbo.

The phantom ranger was alright but something something hetero plot.

I liked Divatox, I couldn’t stand her minions but I liked Divatox. She was a fun hammy villain. She’s extremely petty though so not really an effect villain.

One of the things I remembered very clearly from this series however was General Havoc. I think the general trope used to describe Havoc is probably Depraved Bisexual or Depraved Homosexual. Havoc has that awful characterisation where he is both very camp but also has somewhat incestuous intentions towards his sister, Divatox. It’s really bad and also incredibly homophobic. I don’t know if it was intentional given what can be said about Saban at the time or just clumsy writing. I’ve been informed that he was in like 6 episodes and it definitely felt like longer for whatever reason.

Monkey Bulk and Skull plot sucked and was part of what made this show such a damn slog. Alpha 6 I have the exact same feelings towards. I’ve never been so glad when a character left.
