Power Rangers Zeo

Publication Date: 25/08/2019

Zeo was an interesting step away from MMPR but in the end it is just the status quo with new suits and new zords.

Pyramidas is the best of these zords because it’s just a floating pyramid. This is all I wanted.

I’m kind of not sure about the zeo powers as a concept. It makes sense to make a power that is constantly getting stronger, but if your villains aren’t going to match that progress, there wasn’t really any threat. We always knew that it was just a matter of time before Tommy could cough in Mondo’s general direction and instantly murder him.

I liked having Billy as support, as much as I love him as a ranger the support role suited him brilliantly and I like when rangers have active, competent support. Of course, he left the show for a bit to start his separation from Power Rangers and I really liked how they incorporated the aquitar rangers into that. It felt like a very natural shift for Billy, like yeah it was always right for him to go date aliens now, that seems like him. Though Cestria seems like a half assed cover story given y’know… name similarity to someone else. Kind of just picture Billy suddenly like “uh yea my girlfriend uhhhhh cest…Cestria. Yeah, that’s it.”

Also they broke up Kimberly and Tommy off screen and that wasn’t okay. It’s just to push Kat and Tommy, it’s not worth it.

We also get a load of Native American stereotypes and appropriation as we try to build off Tommy’s story from Alien Rangers. It’s embarrassing to watch. Many things show how Zordon Era Power Rangers is a product of it’s time, but none quite like the unintentional racism. It’s also a great time for Tommy to take over the show like he does every other episode. It’s always the Tommy show and we can’t stop him.

Now despite how fantastic Pyramidas is, Trey… pretty much is useless and sucks. We have all this lead up to reveal it’s a Zi-O trinity of three dudes we don’t know. It’s nice that we almost give the power to Billy and deciding on not doing that giving it to Jason so he can… exist in the show again is cool. I really don’t have much memory of Jason doing anything really worthwhile when he was the Gold Ranger.

I’m not really a fan of the Machine Empire. It’s fine and we need to change the villains but these ones just didn’t grab me at all. We still got Rita and co. though, which was great and probably helped the change.

Also this is apparently when we had the episode where we found out Skull is a talented piano player who does classical music which I really like and it does make sense for Skull. The dweeb dressed as Jean Valjean for Hallowe’en, of course this is the kind of thing he actually enjoys doing. Bulk being such a good friend to him is brilliant, and it was one of those standout episodes of the Zordon Era for me. We also get to see them fighting which was brilliant.
